A Heartfelt Goodbye to Dr Michael Shanley

A Heartfelt Goodbye to Dr Michael Shanley

After more than two decades of dedicated service to the people of Bundoran, and particularly Ballyshannon, and communities of South Donegal, West Leitrim and North Sligo, Dr Michael Shanley has retired from general practice.

There are some people whose path to a place feels, in retrospect, almost inevitable. Dr Michael Shanley is one of them.

Michael was born in London, but his family returned to Ireland when he was just two years old, settling in Longford where he attended the renowned St Mel’s College. He graduated from UCD in 1986 where he excelled in Anatomy and was noted for his perfect attendance at anatomy tutorials, he completed his internship at the Mater Hospital in Dublin, and got his first taste of the west of Ireland during a house job at Sligo University Hospital in 1987 — a part of the country that would, eventually, claim him for good.

His training took him further afield before that happened. GP registrar year in Edinburgh — a city where, he has noted cheerfully, around seventy per cent of his fellow trainees were Irish — was by all accounts a brilliant year, with the Highlands providing early opportunities for the mountain walking that has been a constant companion throughout his life.

He subsequently joined an NHS practice in Nottingham, intending to stay for three years. He stayed for ten. He also deepened his clinical expertise considerably, completing a Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine and a Masters in Pain Management with the University of Wales in Cardiff, and training in acupuncture and hypnosis.

When the time came to return to Ireland in 2004, Michael knew exactly what he was looking for: a practice by the sea, with mountain views, in the hometown of Rory Gallagher. Ballyshannon ticked every box and a chance encounter with Dr Philip Murphy set the move in motion.

Since joining Bayview Family Practice, he has been a cornerstone of care for the Ballyshannon community. His specialist skills in musculoskeletal medicine and pain management have helped countless patients who might otherwise have faced long waits and longer journeys. He worked with HSE and Caredoc to help establish the out-of-hours GP service from 2013, an enduring contribution to how this community accesses care when it needs it most. And through it all, he has been a colleague of warmth, depth, and quiet and not so quiet humour.

Beyond the surgery, Michael has remained thoroughly himself. He completed a triathlon alongside his sons — the kind of thing that tells you a great deal about a man. His Johnny Logan impersonation is a thing of legend.

To Michael, from all of us at Bayview Family Practice:

Thank you. Thank you for the skill, the steadiness, and the genuine care you brought to this practice for over twenty years. The patients whose pain you eased, whose worries you listened to, and whose trust you held so faithfully — they are the better for having had you.

We wish you, Jo, and all your family every happiness in this well-deserved retirement.

Thank you.
