NOTICE RE: FLU VACCINES 26/27 and COVID BOOSTERS 26/27.

CALLING ALL 65s and OVER!
COME TO OUR WALK- IN FLU/COVID VACCINE CLINIC on Friday 18th September at 1 pm
in BAYVIEW FAMILY PRACTICE, BALLYSHANNON SURGERY.
(FOR 65s and OVER ONLY)
No booking required for the walk- in clinic. Only requirements are that
- you are a patient of the practice and never had adverse reaction to flu vaccine in the past.
- You are over 64
Please make sure to wear short sleeved top and avoid wearing layers of clothes. When capacity is reached on the day of the walk-in clinic we will not be permitting futher entry to patients.
NOTE: There two different vaccines this year
- Enhanced flu vaccine (aIIV -Fluad) for aged 65s and over only
- standard flu vaccine (Vaxigrip/Influvac) for 60-64 year olds and patients with medical condition.
Our first vaccine delivery next week only contains the enhanced flu vaccine for 65s and over. We expect to get delivery of our standard flu vaccines for under 65s and patients with medical condition in the last few days of September..
**We will run an under 65s walk in vaccination clinic on Friday October 2nd in our Ballyshannon Surgery after we receive delivery of flu vaccines for this age cohort. We will post details of the times of this walk in clinic shortly.**
We also have daily slots for the flu vaccine and covid booster:
-for aged 65s and over available on or after 19th September that can be booked by ringing the surgery now.
-for 60-64 year olds and patients with medical condition available on or after 2nd October that can be booked by ringing the surgery now.

INFLUENZA
The following groups are eligible to receive enhanced flu vaccine (Fluad) without charge in 2026/27:
- All adults aged 65 years and over
The following groups are eligible to receive the annual standard influenza vaccine (Influvac/Vaxigrip) without charge in 2026/27:
- All adults aged 60-64 years
- All those aged 18 years and older living in residential care facilities for older people and other long stay facilities where rapid spread is likely to follow the introduction of infection
- All those aged 6-23 months and 18-59 years at increased risk of influenza-related complications such as
- Cancer
- Chronic heart disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Chronic liver disease
- Chronic neurological disease
- Chronic respiratory disease
- Diabetes and other metabolic disorders, including inherited metabolic disorders
- Haemoglobinopathies
- Immunocompromise due to disease or treatment ( asplenia/hyposplenism)
- Those with any condition that can compromise respiratory function (e.g. spinal cord injury, seizure disorder, or other neuromuscular disorder especially those attending special schools/day centres)
- Body mass index ≥ 40kg/m2
- Serious mental health conditions
- Children and adults with Down syndrome
- Those with underlying conditions that increase the risk of serious illness
- All children aged 2 to 17 years
- All pregnant women
- All healthcare workers
- Carers
- Household contacts of people at increased risk of influenza related complications
- People with close, regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl
The following groups are eligible to receive the nasal spray influenza vaccine (LAIV-Fluenz) without charge in 2026/27:
- All children aged 2 to 17 years
Ideally, the influenza vaccine should be given early in the influenza season, before influenza begins to spread in our communities
COVID
The following groups are recommended by NIAC for an autumn COVID-19 booster:
- Those aged 60 years and older
- Those aged 6 months – 59 years with immunocompromise associated with a suboptimal response to vaccination
- Those aged 6 months – 59 years with medical conditions associated with a higher risk of COVID-19 hospitalisation, severe disease or death
- Those aged 18-59 years living in long term care facilities for older adults
- Health and care workers
- For pregnant adolescents and adults, a COVID-19 vaccine once in pregnancy is recommended if it is more than six months since their previous COVID-19 vaccine or infection. COVID-19 vaccine can be given at any stage in pregnancy, ideally given between 20-34 weeks’ gestation.
- Further, NIAC has advised that for those aged 18-59 years who are healthy a COVID-19 vaccine is not routinely recommended this autumn, however access to a COVID-19 vaccine should be available for those who, following discussion of their reasons with a health care provider request vaccination.
